Lyrics Standing on the Side of Love
The Lyric Poetry of Greg Greenway "you are never in the same place twice"
LYRICS FOR Standing on the Side of Love
As you lie sleeping, I will not stop,
headlights on the blacktop.
In the wee hours of my thing
driving, driving.
When we first met how it must have seemed
to meet a young man in a boy’s dream.
No information, just desire, higher, higher.
It’s a lonely romance
it’s a desperate urge
to put something beautiful in this world.
There are moments in a night’s success
when something rises from the emptiness
and stirs the brave hope of a young desire,
higher, higher.
Chorus
You have shown me the equal and opposite force
of found girls who want to save lost boys.
They know the longest road is never done alone
and give them a way, a way back home.
As you lie sleeping, through the misting rain,
high beams in the fast lane,
in the wee hours of our thing driving driving.

I used to stand by the side of a road
that stretched into the past.
I turned around. There were two ways to go
and a load to lay down at last.
I saw sisters and daughters
brothers and sons
and the lines that divide them up
when they call my name
I’ll be standing on the side of love.
Everybody knows history’s a bald faced lie.
It all depends on the side you’re from.
There is no way to ever unwind
the things already done
by sisters and daughters
brothers and sons
to push some down
and to rise some up.
When they call my name
I’ll be standing on the side of love.
I want to be there when the space ship lands
and something crawls out that we don’t understand.
That’s when we’ll all embrace the family of man,
and the rest will be forgotten.
We the people.
So many gave their lives to carry these words this far.
We the people. There are times it seems
we’ve forgotten who the people are.
They’re just sisters and daughters
brothers and sons,
no lines should divide them up
when they call my name
I’ll be standing on the side of love.

There’s a bird on the wind, far away, far away,
and a voice beyond words, fly away, fly away.
Nothing can touch you wherever you’re going
flying so much of your life without wondering why.
There’s a fawn in a glade, hide away, hide away
in the leaves brown embrace, fall and fade,
fall and fade
Nothing can touch you wherever you’re going
hiding so much of your life without wondering why.
Then the sun on one day gave my heart the color yellow
and it stayed here inside all the long days that followed.
Nothing can touch this whereever I’m going
as long as my heart is still filled with the color of light.
Nothing can touch you whereever you’re going
as long as your heart is still filled with the color of light.
Flying, hiding, singing a song of life.

You are never in the same place twice
as balls of fire and balls of ice
spin in space of their own device.
Somehow it holds together.
All the creatures great and small
imagine life before the fall.
They see their own and then guess it all.
Somehow it holds together.
The time will come when the winds arise
and you stare across the great divide
and jump the cliffs with the dream to fly
without knowing the weight of feathers.
The curtains rise and the story’s told.
The gaps are filled with blood and gold.
Martyrs mask the remaining holes,
Somehow it holds together.
Old men in their drafty homes
with crowded heads and achy bones
knowing all anyone could know
Part of them young forever.
They made their peace with an empty sky
with broken hearts, with battle cries,
the day they jumped the cliffs with the dream to fly
without knowing the weight of feathers.
Flying, falling, what’s the difference now.
I’ll take with me your deep blue eyes,
your fondest hopes and your best advice.
We’ve disagreed almost all our lives
but how could that ever matter.
All those years just to provide
for me the thing you could never try...
to jump the cliffs with the dream to fly
without knowing the weight of feathers.
Oh yes, I jumped the cliffs with the dream to fly...

I’m so sick and tired of being sick and tired.
I’m so sick and tired of being sick and tired.
I’m so sick and tired of being sick and tired.
Lord, lord, lord, I’m dying.
I’m so sick and tired of being denied.
I’m so sick and tired of being denied.
Treated like a child, deaf, dumb, and blind,
Lord, lord, lord, I’m dying.
I’m gonna get up, gonna get up,
gonna rise up from this bed,
I’m gonna get up, gonna get up,
gonna break these chains.
I’m gonna get up, gonna get up,
gonna lift my weary head,
nothing’s gonna stop me from trying.

I carry your heart with me
I am never without it.
Whatever a moon has always meant,
whatever a sun has always sung,
whatever has kept the stars apart is you.
I carry your heart with me
I am never without it.
The secret that nobody knows
from root to bud of a tree that grows
higher than soul can hope is you.
I carry your heart with me
in my heart.

People will fall, you know they will.
They’ll find that cold hard ground.
Before they have landed
you best understand that
you can’t keep a good woman down.
People make mistakes, you know they do.
There’s enough blame to go around.
Before you point the finger
you better remember
you can’t keep a good woman down.
You can’t, no you can’t,
you can’t keep a good woman down.
You tell someone they can’t
they will show you they can.
Say something’s lost, then it’s found.
If I know you, you’ll have on your dancing shoes
‘cause you can’t keep a good woman down.

Lately I’ve been thinking of the power of a moment
when anything is possible and everyone is present.
The door is wide open at the church of what is
walk in.
This is the light I carry.
Tonight is a celebration.
You have no complaint, sinners or saints
under the bright constellations.
Lately I’ve been thinking, we’re all in the same place.
As far as anyone can tell
we’ve got it all to ourselves
The hymnals are open at the church of what is,
let’s sing.
Lately I’ve been thinking
nothing lasts forever, so
remember us to those you love
leave the stars on when you go.
Chorus

The sun came up down an old dirt road
saying hello new day, hello.
It shone on my back like a father’s hand
saying my son, how you have grown.
Sun goes up, moon goes down
and you knew from the start
the measure of all things
is still the heart.
The bum lay down in a rain wet street
saying, “I don’t care, I don’t care.”
“I’m far too deep in this cold dark well
of things that keep me here.”
Chorus
On wings of wax, he flew too high
until he fell into the sea.
The ship sailed on and the farmer plowed
and the day passed gracefully.
Chorus

It takes a little patch of sky to let the sun come down
then it warms the earth and it turns things around
oh, I don’t know. Who am I to say.
But it just seems to work that way.
It just makes me smile like the first day of spring.
There’s an explosion of life inside of everything
Oh, I don’t know. Who am I to say.
But it just seems to work that way.
It takes one black cloud pointed out every day
to make the whole world turn into a dark, dark place
Oh, I don’t know. Who am I to say.
But it just seems to work that way.
It just seems to work that way
whatever anybody says, teacher or preacher
each of us reaches a place
where it just seems to work that way.
It takes one big dream put into the air
where the words grow wings and carry us where
we must go. Who am I to say.
But it just seems to work that way.
I’ll do all I can until the day I die
but there are still so many searching
for a little patch of sky
oh, I don’t know.
Who am I to say.
But it just seems to work that way.
