I just went to a talk by Paul Chaat Smith (Comanche), an author and an associate curator at the National Museum of the American Indian. He was very pointed in his insistence on not romanticizing anyone. He took a global view in saying that in the face of all of history, Native Americans are “fully human.”
I sat with that for a while, what in an historical context does fully human actually mean. Ah, I thought. Then I walked home safely on well paved roads with all of the inhumanity of humans roiling in my head. My smart, accomplished, lovely wife greeted me, in my own home, and I stir-fried my third meal of the day. I decided that it was a good day on planet earth.
